The Rewrite | 2014 | Hugh Grant, Marisa Tomei

Hugh Grant and Marisa Tomei star in writer-director Marc Lawrence’s romcom. The peak of Hollywood screenwriter Keith Michaels’ (Grant) career was 1997, when he won an Oscar. But it’s been a long downward slump since then, during which the films he wrote bombed and his marriage ended. Now, with no studios interested in his work, he has relocated to Binghamton in upstate New York to take a university job teaching a screenwriting course. He gets off to a bad start, putting little effort into his classes, disparaging the works of Jane Austen to Mary Weldon (Allison Janney), the Austen-loving department head; embarking on an affair with one of his students, Karen Gabney (Bella Heathcote); and patronising the promising efforts of self-improving single-mum Holly Carpenter (Tomei). None of this does him any favours, but it does lead to the crunch point that will give him a chance to start to rewrite his own life.
