Hail, Caesar! | 2016 | Josh Brolin, George Clooney

Josh Brolin leads an all-star cast that includes George Clooney, Alden Ehrenreich, Ralph Fiennes, Jonah Hill, Scarlett Johansson, Frances McDormand, Tilda Swinton, and Channing Tatum, in the Coen brothers’ 1950s-set comedy-drama. Eddie Mannix (Brolin) is a producer and director for the major Hollywood movie studio Capitol Pictures.

In addition to keeping productions on time, logistically feasible and staffed, he also works tirelessly behind the scenes as a fixer; protecting his employers’ rights and profitability – and keeping scandals out of the press. But now is not a good time for Mannix: Capitol’s big feature, the biblical epic Hail, Caesar! A Tale of the Christ, runs into trouble when its star Baird Whitlock (Clooney) vanishes during the shoot; DeeAnna Moran (Johansson), star of lavishly choreographed synchronised swimming spectaculars, falls pregnant out of wedlock; and the studio boss wants to broaden western star Hobie Doyle’s (Ehrenreich) appeal by placing him in a whodunit drama, despite Doyle’s pronounced Texan accent and few acting skills. Working against Mannix’s efforts are a star who isn’t afraid to blackmail, another who’d seeming rather be a detective… and the communists.
