Conspirator, The | 2010 | James McAvoy, Robin Wright

Robert Redford’s historical drama tells the story of Mary Surratt, who was put on trial for collusion in the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. Robin Wright plays Surratt, a widow whose boarding house was a meeting place for the conspirators and whose son John (Johnny Simmons) may have been involved in the plot.
Surratt’s initially reluctant defence lawyer is Frederick Aiken (James McAvoy), whose doubts about taking on the case are gradually superseded by a conviction that Surratt is being used as a scapegoat.
The cast also includes Evan Rachel Wood, Colm Meaney and Kevin Kline, and the performances and period detail are as impressive as could be expected of the talent involved. If the political stance of the film is a little simplistic, it’s nevertheless a polished and thoughtful production.
