Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph and Rose Byrne star in this Oscar-nominated comedy, which features some superb turns from an impressive ensemble cast. The humour skates confidently across the spectrum, from observation and satire to slapstick and gross-out. Annie (Wiig) is in her mid-thirties, cynical, single and broke (she’s holding down a job she hates purely to pay the bills following the failure of her own business). So it’s with mixed emotions (though mainly horror) that she greets the news that the last of her single friends, Lilian (Rudolph), is about to tie the knot (to The IT Crowd’s Chris O’Dowd). Annie naturally agrees to be her best friend’s maid of honour, and is thus exposed to the full – if seldom discussed – horrors of the role.
In this case, they include rivalries among the bridesmaids, a villainous attempt by one of them (Byrne) to hijack Annie’s plans, and a dress-fitting that’s spectacularly undermined by food poisoning. The cast includes Melissa McCarthy, John Hamm and Matt Lucas. The film was written by Wiig and Annie Mumolo, directed by Paul Feig and produced by Judd Apatow
